I attended Cardinal Pacelli from 3rd to 8th grade and Jim was my idol. I've always been a bit of a tech junkie and was taking piano at the time. Jim was gracious enough to show me the basics of the Church organ, including its internals, all of the supporting equipment, wires, speakers, switches, which I found truly fascinating. Jim collaborated with my piano teacher at the time and I ended up transitioning to organ. He even took time to find a church who was selling their old organ, and much to my mother's dismay, we ended up with an enormous Baldwin Model III church organ in our home living room with full pedalboard. There were two enormous speaker cabinets in the basement, with which I could (and did often) shake the house. I am saddened to hear of Jim's passing, but I know he has a special place with our Lord. Thank you for sharing your wonderful talents with us.

It was a shock to hear of Jim's passing. I've known him so long it seemed like he would always be here. We were both Catholic church organists in this city and I had a great respect for Jim over the years -- his great musical talent, his love of the organ and its music, his enthusiasm and energy, his friendliness, his warmth in dealing with his colleagues, choir members and everyone he met. He's now at peace, home at last in the heavenly Kingdom. May God reward him for all the good he has done.

Maureen Connelly Smith posted a condolence

My name is Maureen Connelly Smith and I am Jimmys cousin. When we were younger our families spent a lot of time together. I remember one day Jimmy couldn't of been 5 or 6 years old and we were in the house and he told my brother and I he wanted to show us something. He led us to the living room and there in front of the window was a child's electric piano/organ. He sat down and played for us. I was only 2 years older then him and I thought it was so neat that he could do that and being so young. I think that must of been the start to a great musician. He definenly had a gift. I am going to miss you Jimmy. Love you.

So many great memories with Jim throughout my school choir years. From St. Therese to Newport Catholic, many celebrations were prepared for and successfully carried out. The best of times of times were every year shortly after Halloween when practice began for multiple Christmas masses throughout the tri-state. It was hectic, but fun, and Jim kept us all inline with his patience and humor. Every year at Christmas time I recall the fond memories of driving from church to church to perform music for the congregations under Jim's direction. Thanks for bringing the music to life, Jim. May you rest in eternal peace.
