I worked at LeBlond Inc with Frank for several years. I was very much aware of his basketball prowess as Captain of the Xavier team that won the 1958 NIT championship.Jim Enright ,who was on that team, also worked at LeBlond and I knew Hank Stein as I lived in Sharonville.I had many enjoyable discussions with Frank about his playing days at XU.I eventually saw the films of the 1958 championship game. The story in the sports page of today's Enquirer was excellent It had some facts about Frank we never discussed. Like him I also spent two years at Ft Sill, Oklahoma and I retired to Florida not far from Lakeland were Frank was born. Frank was a very fine person and Catholic gentleman. I enjoyed working with him.I know he will be missed by his family. Sincerely, Edward H. Silva. Formerly, VP-Finance LeBlond Inc.

What if sports simulated a crosstown showdown between the 1958 NIT Champion Xavier Musketeers and the 1975 Cincinnati Bearcats. XU won 91-86 with Captain Frank Tartaron scoring 14 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.

When the Musketeers take the court on Sunday, Feb. 10, against St. Joe's at the Cintas Center, they'll be wearing throwback uniforms to replicate the look of the 1958 NIT Championship team. During a special halftime ceremony, members and coaches of the 1958 team will receive a jersey and a watch to commemorate their amazing victory.
Xavier won its only national championship in 1958 when the NIT rivaled the NCAA Tournament for postseason supremacy. The Musketeers, playing under first-year coach Jim McCafferty, started the season 10-1, but fell into a deep funk heading into postseason play. Seeded last in the NIT field, Xavier defeated Niagara, Bradley and St. Bonaventure to reach the championship game. Led by tournament MVP Hank Stein, Xavier knocked off heavily favored Dayton in overtime in Madison Square Garden to complete what Sport magazine called "one of the greatest upsets in basketball history."
Members of the 1958 team who will be in attendance include:
Joe Viviano, player and All-Tournament Team
Frank Tartaron, team captain
Hank Stein, player and MVP
Don Ruberg, assistant coach
Jim Puthoff, player
Ron Otting, student manager
Tony Oberding, player and All-Tournament Team
Bridget Rogler, daughter of Head Coach Jim McCafferty
Rick Jannott, player
Al Gundrum, player
Jim Dentiger, player
Jeff Courchaine, son of Stu Courchaine

Sorry to report the death of one of Xavier's basketball greats, Francis Xavier Tartaron, who died early on the morning of July 18.
"Frank was the starting center on Xavier's 1958 NIT Championship Team, the first team to bring home a national basketball championship trophy to the Queen City. I'll leave it to the Enquirer to provide the deserving obituary. (GoCincinnati.com)
I lost touch with Frank many many years ago, and that is my misfortune. I remember him as a very likeable gentleman who his opponents said possessed the most lethal pair of elbows in college basketball and he could legally assist you in backing off from that underhand, scooping drag shot that he perfected.
He was one of the nicest people I had the privilege of knowing throughout three of my four years at Xavier. I'm sure we all extend our sympathies to Frank's family for their loss." - WKRQ59
"Certainly, our prayers and thoughts are with Frank's family and friends. I hope his passing was peaceful, and he's now reunited with those who passed before him." -MR Neutral
"Knew him way back when. Nice guy.
Sympathies to the family.
RIP.
"Sports is the only entertainment where, no matter how many times you go back, you never know the ending."
Neil Simon" - Shadow
"any loss in the Xavier nation is sad and I will pray for the repose of his soul. May God find a place for him in the Cintas bleachers of Heaven were he might just tip one in our favor next year. Also prayer for those he will leave behind, I know it is tough to lose someone you love but he will be with you always in your hearts and memories." - Muskieman

"In 1951, Hirt was replaced as head coach by Ned Wulk. Wulk would guide the Musketeers to National Invitational Tournament appearances in 1956 and 1957. The 1956 appearance marked Xaveir's first NIT win, a 84-80 victory over Saint Louis University [4].
After a loss to Bradley in the 1957 NIT, Hirt was replaced as head coach by Jim McCafferty. McCafferty lead the Musketeers back to a third straight NIT. With wins over Niagara, Bradley, Saint Bonaventure and Dayton, Xavier captured the NIT. This was the first post season championship won by any Ohio Division I school." - According to Wikipedia.org

Thoughts and prayers go out for all of you. I have a great many fond memories of Frank: always a smile, good wishes, road trips, picnics, and a bitterly cold camping trip to Hueston Woods where he complimented me on making "wickedly good pancakes." Who knew!? Oh yeah, there were all the basketball tips I could never acquire. Poor man probably shook his head in wonder every night. I hope he is amply rewarded for his patience. Equally, I hope you are all consoled in your hours of need. Mark & Karen

Hi Grandpa! There are so many memories I am going to take with me. There are so many lessons I learned from you - especially the importance of family and good friends. Some of the silly things that I will always remember include: eating a packed lunch at Lake Isabella, the electronics in your house - "Which remote does what?", swimming at the YMCA, playing in your backyard - "Don't let the ball go over the fence!", the "camping" van, XU basketball games, the home videos, and spending the holidays together. It is not going to be the same without you. You will be missed! Love always ~Christina

My favorite memory of Frank (Grandpa T) is simply how welcoming he was when I first met him and joined the family. I remember how excited he was when he offered to show me his family home videos and although I think I heard a few groans (from family members who have likely seen these videos a hundred times) I had a good time watching them and hearing Grandpa T's commentary. Thanks again Grandpa T for welcoming me into the family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
