BERRE Johnnie Sue (nee Starks), passed away on Monday, September 22, 2014 at the age of 93. Johnnie Sue was born in New Point, Indiana to May and John Starks. One of seven children, her father died when she was young and her older sisters helped raise her. In 1943 she completed her RN training at Cincinnati Deaconess Hospital, where two of her older sisters had trained. While a student, her future mother-in-law was one of her patients. Her future mother-in-law was so impressed with the young nurse, she arranged a meeting with her son, Dr. Edgar L. Berre, and eight months later they were married. They were married 59 years before Dr. Berre's passing in 2003. Johnnie was a devoted wife and mother. She was an excellent cook and loved to entertain. She was a founding member of the Women's Auxiliary of the Cincinnati Dental Society, a Brownie and Cub Scout leader for her children and a volunteer school nurse. She was also member of the United Church of Christ, in Oakley. She and Dr. Berre loved to travel and on several occasions they took the entire family for extended stays to Switzerland where her father-in-law was born. She was a member of the Swiss Benevolent Society of Cincinnati. Mother of Linda Miller (Otto) of Alton, IL and Dr. Edgar L. Berre (Cindy) of Cincinnati, OH. Grandmother of Edgar L. Berre, III (Maria) of Chicago, IL, Christopher M. Berre of Cincinnati, OH, Julie Lyn Gillespie (Rick) and Samantha Anna Bernard (Joe) of Alton, IL. She has five great-grandchildren. Johnnie Sue was a resident of Indian Hill for 52 years and resided in the assisted living facility at the Courtyard of The Seasons where she will be remembered for her warm smile and gracious manner. A private ceremony will be arranged at a time for the family. A memorial service will be held in the future at the Courtyard. Memorials may be directed to Heartland Hospice, 3800 Red Bank Rd., Suite D (45227).
