Obituary of Alice M. Massarella
Alice Mae Massarella (nee Lang), died at age 99, on Thursday, October 31st, 2024, joining her husband, John Matthew Massarella and granddaughter, Natalie, who preceded her in death.
She is survived by her sons Gregory (Jan), Mark (Mary), Matthew, Charles (Anita), her niece, Nance, and her daughter, Mary Beth (Jim Reyering). She is also survived by grandchildren: Anthony, James (Sarah), John, (Cortney), Katie (Nathan Kellett), Andrew (Cassandra Roberts), Claire, Jack, David, Emma and Madeline and her great-grandchildren, Aubree, Vivienne, Harper, Dylan, Bennett and Liam. She was the loving aunt of countless nieces and nephews and a godmother to many.
Born on May 12th, 1925, she was the youngest of eleven children of Sophia and Ludwig Lang of Cincinnati Ohio. Growing up in O'Bryonville, she attended Holy Angels School and then St. Mary’s High School where she was enrolled in their secretarial program. Her first job was with the federal rent control office during WWII. She continued to work for the government after the war until she met and married John Massarella on May 16th, 1953. They raised six children and were married for 27 years until his untimely death in December of 1980.
Alice and Jack sacrificed to provide their children with a Catholic education. In addition, Alice served the church in many capacities. Along with her husband, she was a founding member, and the first woman, to work for the St. Vincent DePaul Society of Nativity Parish. She worked as the secretary of Nativity School for over ten years and then as the secretary to the provincial of the Notre Dame Convent for another ten years until her retirement. Even after retiring, she continued to volunteer for Saint Vincent DePaul well into her seventies.
Her Christian example of acceptance and service has long been a source of encouragement and pride to her family. Her children and grandchildren will continue to benefit from her legacy of faith and love.
