Grandpa Chuck taught me to work hard, bring home donuts, get fully dressed for the day before leaving your bedroom, and open and close doors quickly or be accused of being born in a barn. Grandma Georgene taught me to be an enthusiastic sports fan, sing out loud, iron everything, and enjoy lingering in one’s bathrobe.
My grandparents used to host Christmas parties in the late 70s. Grandma in high heels and a long dress. Stunning. Grandpa in white leather shoes and a perfectly-pressed suit. Meticulous.
I remember Grandma running circles through the house plating cookies, lighting luminaries, and chilling Tab Cola. Once, my grandpa caught her mid lap and spun her around the hallway-turned dance floor. Her long hair and dress took flight. He dipped her, “I love you, Georgene” and they kissed.
As an eight year old, I reeled, but that flashbulb moment between my fingers is now a cherished lesson of love and support.
