When I first met Bernie, he and Valerie had been dating awhile. It was apparent to me that this was a special relationship for each of them. The way they looked at each other, the tender gestures and loving touches gave it all away. Maureen, thank you for introducing them.
My family welcomed Bernie wholeheartedly, and he fit in well. He and Valerie introduced me to Skyline Chili. Bernie was somewhat scandalized when I persisted in twirling the spaghetti noodles around my fork instead of cutting them with the fork. Bernie, Valerie and I played many competitive games of Trivial Pursuit. He had a broad and deep knowledge base and was hard to beat, especially if history questions came up often, but Valerie and I managed to do so at times. The same can be said for Jeopardy which was “ must see TV” in the Woebkenberg home. I always thought that Bernie would have been a great contestant on the show! Bernie was a lover of crossword puzzles, too, completing them in ink.
I remember how thrilled my family was when Valerie and Bernie told us they were expecting their first child. I visited soon after Eric was born, and saw two ecstatic parents and their sweet baby. Bernie was eager to help Valerie with their son, and his face would light up with love and pride when he gazed at his firstborn. That was the case when Michael and Emily were born, too. Bernie’s love was poured out in many ways: playing in the backyard, attending T-ball games, band concerts and dance recitals, singing and dancing -a little - to the Kinks, praying before meals and talking around the dinner table.
I see so many of Bernie’s attributes in his children. In Eric, it is the love of books and words; in Michael it is the love of history; in Emily it is the love of music. Each of them is patriotic like both their parents and each of them learned how to love one another from them, too. That legacy of love of a man, a husband and a father lives on in and through Eric, Michael and Emily.
We will all miss Bernie and remember him well; memories of a life well-lived will be with us always.
Love,
Diane

My fondest memories of Bernie are when we were kids during the summer. We would spend the entire day outside except for meals and sleeping. We rode bikes, played four square and pickle, swam at Kennedy pool, went across the railroad tracks to the woods, had neighborhood whiffle ball games in our backyard and played ghost in the graveyard until the street lights came on.
Watching the memorial video late last night, I saw the love that Bernie had for Valerie, Eric, Michael and Emily in every picture.
I pray that God will help to comfort us through these happy and wonderful memories of a brother, husband, dad and friend
I love you Bernie. Rest in peace
Jo

Bernie & I didn't do a lot together, as I was the older sister and Gary & Bernie were fairly close in age. I do remember that Bernie was quite the baseball pitcher and we would all walk up to Kennedy Park to watch his games. He was also very smart and really did well in school. I remember when we met Valerie for the first time , and you could tell that he was so happy. He was thrilled with his children and so proud of them. You left us too soon......Rest in Peace and we will meet again

We have so many wonderful memories of Bernie. I remember welcoming him into the Ingels family and seeing the love and smile on Valerie’s and his face. I see his love as he is holding his children, his pride shine through talking about his children’s baseball and dance events and their futures. I see his love, kindness and strength in Eric, Michael and Emily and feel blessed to have them as my nephews and niece. Kevin and I shared fun adventures in China where Bernie was game for a bike ride and exploring the historical sites. Bernie made us feel so welcome when we visited….allowing sister time with Valerie, talking about current events and the Reds, preparing a wonderful meal as he was quite the chef. We often sat on the patio looking at a beautifully mowed lawn and sat around a fire, sometimes watching a firework show put on by Michael and Eric. Bernie’s love shone through in the everyday things. Bernie and Valerie created a loving family. Beautiful memories will live forever in all of our hearts. We love you.
Love,
Sylvia and Kevin

I was lucky to grow up with cool Uncles. From family Birthday, Christmas, and Easter gatherings to playing wiffle/baseball games as a kid we made a lot of good memories and I looked up to Uncle Bernie. I remember getting to spend the night at his house and he may, or may not of snuck a sip of beer to us as kids at Christmas lol. As an adult we had some good times down at the stadium watching the Reds play. I always enjoyed talking baseball and politics with him. Uncle Bernie would crack me up sometimes with his sense of humor and impersonations. Thanks for being a great Uncle and may you rest in peace Uncle.

How do you say goodbye to someone who has been part of your life as long as you can remember? 25 months separated us, and I can't remember a time without Bernie. When we were little, we were together 100% of the time. Outside playing in the woods; going swimming at the community pool; but especially tossing and playing baseball. Heck, we even took showers together, and shared a bunk bed. We'd lay in bed talking until Mom would yell at us to go to sleep.
Bernie, rest in peace. Now that you're reunited with Mom, Dad, and Mark, please tell them how much we miss all of you.
Gary
