Obituary of Robert J. Schmitz

Robert Joseph Schmitz, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, music, and community spirit. A graduate of Dartmouth College, Class of 1949, Robert’s love for learning and passion for music shaped his life in profound ways. Robert’s musical journey began in college, where he played saxophone and clarinet in big bands. His love for music remained constant throughout his life—taking up the piano mid-career and later playing clarinet in the Sycamore Band. His melodies brought joy to those around him and reflected his warm and gentle nature. A proud veteran of the Korean War, Robert served his country with honor before pursuing a career as an accountant. Though dedicated to his profession, he found his true joy in the people and communities he touched. Whether through his church, the local swim and tennis club, or his musical endeavors, he was always an active and engaged member of his community. Robert was known for his genuine spirit, ever-present smile, and innate ability to strike up a conversation with anyone. His kindness and warmth left a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Mary Anne (nee Mattheis) Schmitz, who was his partner in retirement as they traveled, went for walks, and explored new restaurants and foods together. He was a cherished father of Bob, Jr. (Jennifer) Schmitz, David (Katie) Schmitz, and Ralph (Holly) Schmitz. A devoted grandfather to JP, Alex, and Sebastien Schmitz, Liesel, Charles, and Max Schmitz, and Marcello and Finnegan Schmitz. Loving brother to John “Bud” (Phyllis) Schmitz and the late Dorthea “Deanne” (Kenneth “Ken”) Dillenbeck. Dear uncle of John Jr. (Kirsten) Schmitz, Anne (Dave) Lokes, Karen Schmitz (Dana) Parks, Michael (Fawn) Schmitz, Kenneth “Ken” (Johanna) Dillenbeck, Bruce Dillenbeck, Richard “Winch” (Caroline) Dillenbeck, and Robert “Bob” Dillenbeck. In addition to his parents, Valentine A. and Julia (nee Hughes) Schmitz, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Joan Isabel (nee Dittoe) Schmitz. Robert’s presence will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
