Obituary of George C. Kalomeres

George C. Kalomeres, beloved and only son of Charles and Margeory (nee Apostolopoulos) Kalomeres, loving brother of Matula (the late Ted) Gregory, Tasha (the late Jesse) Hill, Rita (the late George) Kavouras, and just 40 days ago he lost his sister, the late Sophia (George) Jonson. He was the proud Godfather of Janice (Tom) Kunkemoelloer, Presvytera Lisa (Fr. Christos) Christakis, and Michael Christman. Cherished uncle of Becky (the late Carl) Christman, Tom (Pam) Gregory, Philanthy (Ron) Nichols, Dino Hill, Dean (Hedy) Gregory, Vickie Gregory, Maria (the late John Franklin) Kavouras, Terry (Evan) Andrews, Pete (Jennifer) Kavouras, Deanne (Doug) Wilhelm, Nick Jonson, Lynne (Mike) Schutter, and Marjorie (Bill Puff) Schaeffer. He is also survived by numerous great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by numerous cousins and several close friends in the last few years. The family would like to acknowledge George’s first caregiver, Robin Mitchell, who didn’t just take care of him but considered him family. They would also like to thank his “Big Brother” Terry Scheffield, Lynne Sennett and Sallie Oglesby for the great care they took with George. They made George’s last few years as perfect as they could possibly be. George was a 1951 graduate of Withrow High School, a graduate of the University of Cincinnati, and a US Army veteran, serving during the Korean Conflict. He owned Kalomeres Insurance Company in Kennedy Heights and managed CK Properties, a family of properties in Kennedy Heights. He was a lifelong resident of the Kennedy Heights and Kenwood area and made many caring friends when he moved to Traditions at Camargo in Madeira two years ago. George was the first generation of his family to be born in the United States. His parents immigrated from Geraki, Greece, a place that George visited a few times during his life. He loved traveling, singing (he had a beautiful tenor voice), acting in his theatre group, and making his neighbors envious of all the plants and flowers he grew in his yard. George was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity-St Nicholas Greek Orthodox church. He was a member of AHEPA, GOYA, had served on parish council and a longtime member of the church choir. George could always be counted on to help with the annual Panageri (Greek Festival) and was one of its earliest organizers. He enjoyed his monthly poker night with his buddies from the church for many years. He was a member of the Wyoming Players, well into the late 1990s, having enjoyed the theatre arts his entire life. He was also a member of the Martinaires Karaoke Group. He maintained relationships with relatives that still lived in Greece. George had been a wonderful son and very caring brother to his four sisters whose families he was always a part of. He became a devoted uncle and was active in the lives of his godchildren, nieces and nephews. He could relate to children,and was always interested in what they were doing. He was a "kid" at heart, and had an enthusiasm for learning and teaching. George became the "family historian" and took movies or photos for over 50 years.. He started with 8 millimeter home movies in the 1950's and was always seen with camera in hand. He recorded numerous significant family events throughout those years. He was joyful and always had a smile on his face. He was a compassionate human being, a gentle soul, a source of comfort, and always held out a helping hand to anyone in need. His home was always open for a place to stay, whether short or long, including the dogs he rescued throughout the years. He loved them all very much. The bright light that is George will always be carried in the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved him. George passed away surrounded by his family on Wednesday, August 21st, just over two hours shy of his 91st birthday. There will never be another like Uncle George. The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 29th from 5-7PM at Thomas-Justin Memorial, 7500 Montgomery Rd. (45236) Kenwood. And again, on Friday, August 30th from 10AM until the time of the funeral service, 11AM at Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 7000 Winton Rd. (45224) Finneytown.
