Obituary of Constandinos J. Condorodis, MD

Dr. Constandinos “Gus” Condorodis, who delivered thousands of babies, dies at 89. Son of Greek immigrants, Cincinnatian, Physician, Husband, and Father. Dr. Constandinos J. Condorodis, lovingly called “Gus” by those who knew him, lived a life of service to his patients and love for his family. He died peacefully at home with Carolyn Condorodis, his wife of 63 years, at his side. To know Gus is to love Gus. He led by example, demonstrating to his family the importance of hard work, fulfilling expectations, showing respect for all, and putting the needs of others first. Gus was fulfilled day after day, year after year, by these core values. Born on August 13, 1934, Gus lived his entire life in Cincinnati. As the third son of his Greek immigrant parents, John and Smaro Condorodis, he came home from the hospital to a third-floor, walk-up apartment across from Washington Park during the record-breaking hot summer of 1934. He spoke Greek at home, learned English in school and worked in his father’s restaurant at the corner of 5th and John Streets from an early age. The Condorodis family later moved to Price Hill, where Gus grew up, attended Carson Elementary and graduated from Western Hills High School in 1952. A proud westside Cincinnatian, he graduated pre-med at the University of Cincinnati in 1956, and from U.C. Medical School in 1960. He completed his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology in 1964 and began solo practice with his wife Carolyn as his partner and office nurse. Gus built a thriving medical practice and delivered thousands of babies throughout his more than 40-year career. He was an active member in several medical professional organizations, most notably the Academy of Medicine of Cincinnati. He was president of the Cincinnati Obstetrical and Gynecological Society in 1980. Gus was also instrumental in the addition of maternity to Bethesda North Hospital in 1991. Gus was a devoted family man with a deep love for Cincinnati. He left a legacy of love for his children, which is passing from generation to generation. Beyond worldwide travels and spending time with family, he adored following all Cincinnati sports teams, playing bridge with his friends, and enjoying Sigma Chi alumni functions. He lived a life of purpose and always cherished having the opportunity to bring babies into the world. As fate or divine intervention would have it, Dr. Condorodis delivered his hospice nurse nearly 50 years earlier. She shared with Gus’s family that the delivery had been difficult, and her mother credited Dr. Condorodis with “saving her baby’s life.” In addition to his beloved wife Carolyn S. Condorodis (nee Zehner), he is survived by his four children: C. Tamara Condorodis (Dr. John) Sullivan, Melanie D. Condorodis (David) Snell, Meghan E. Condorodis (Chris) Shimala, and Dr. Christopher J. (Amy) Condorodis; his grandchildren Nicholas Sullivan, Brian Sullivan, Ashleigh Snell (Eric) Lefeld, Erika Snell, Cara Snell, Adam Shimala, Claire Shimala, Charlotte Condorodis, Norah Condorodis, Jacob Condorodis; and his great grandchildren Madeline Lefeld and Elena Lefeld. He is also survived by his two older brothers, Peter J. Condorodis and Anestis J. Condorodis, and numerous nieces and nephews. Dr. Condorodis’s family will receive friends on Sunday, February 11th from 1-3PM at Thomas-Justin Memorial, 7500 Montgomery Rd. (45236) Kenwood. Funeral Service will be held on Monday, February 12th at 10:30AM at Holy Trinity St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 7000 Winton Rd. (45224) Finneytown.
