I met John in 1989 when I moved to Cincinnati to take an opportunity with Ferguson Enterprises. Cincinnati was part of the Midwest Region which John managed as Vice President/Regional Manager. He was a terrific boss and later became a terrific friend. He was a UVA alumnus and I'm a Virginia Tech alumnus so we had fun with that rivalry. As John was battling cancer it was so great for him to be able to see the UVA basketball team win the national championship and the football team win their rivalry game against Virginia Tech.
I was blessed to be able to spend some time with John in August. He was in the hospital recovering from an infection, but he was having a good day. We spent the afternoon talking about everything. He was upbeat and determined just like normal. I'm very appreciative of the opportunities he provided me at Ferguson, thankful for our friendship, and grateful for that August afternoon.
Margaret and I send our deepest sympathy to Patti, Ryan, Alan, and the entire family.
