Obituary of Peter Gregory Whedon

Peter Gregory Whedon of Cincinnati Ohio passed away Wednesday February 21 surrounded by friends and family.  Born in Buffalo New York on May 23, 1932, he was raised in the suburb of Oakwood in Dayton Ohio.  Peter, 'Pete', 'Cave' (a high school nickname derived from Caveman) and in later years 'Big Daddy', was known for his engaging smile, fun loving nature and for telling stories.  Peter enjoyed sharing many remembrances, including how as a boy in the 1930's while visiting Englewood Ohio, his great grandmother "Mom" Becker would take him out back with her to prepare Sunday dinner, bringing one of her live chickens to the chopping block.  At the age of sixteen, while a student at Oakwood High School he met his future wife to be Marilyn Jane Sargent.  He went on to earn a business degree at Ohio Wesleyan where he was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.  After marrying and graduation the couple moved to Lowry Air Force Base, Denver Colorado, where he served the two years in the Air Force as a Lieutenant.  In their sixty-five years of marriage Pete and Marilyn enjoyed stays in Colorado, Chicago, Syracuse, Parkersburg West Virginia and Cincinnati.  The Whedons had twenty wonderful years in Parkersburg where Peter was employed by Marbon (later known as Borg Warner) who at the time made the plastic used in NFL helmets.  A sales marketing professional, his approach to sales management was reported in the Wall Street Journal.  In Parkersburg, Peter served on the board at the local YMCA, ushered at the First United Methodist Church and served on the board at Oxbow Golf Course.  Pete and Marilyn also enjoyed their many years in their dinner bridge club in Parkersburg, forging life-long friendships.  It was here where he became a gourmet cook, serving dishes such as cheese souffle, roast pig and bananas foster. A Christian, Peter's walk with Christ began later in life.  He often recounted his experience in the "Emmaus Walk" at Hyde Park United Methodist Church.  It was there in 1986 he became a Christian and formed a bond with fellow Emmaus walkers, some who were with him at death.  Peter was also an enthusiastic member of Armstrong Chapel, Horizon Church and MSPC all of Cincinnati. Peter Whedon is predeceased by son Phillip Gregory and daughter Karen Jane.  He is survived by wife Marilyn Sargent of Kenwood, sister Betsy Krystynak of Tucson, and son John and granddaughters, Lucy and Lila of Clifton Ohio. Visitation will be held at 10 am Wednesday February 28 at Madeira-Silverwood Presbyterian Church, 8000 Miami Avenue in Cincinnati Ohio with funeral services beginning at 11 am.    Graveside services will be held for family members that afternoon at Woodland Cemetery in Dayton Ohio near University of Dayton.  In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Hospice of Cincinnati, PO Box 633597 (45263-3597)http://hospiceofcincinnati.org and Madeira Silverwood Presbyterian Church in Kenwood.
